Digital Health Technologies and Community Well-Being: Emerging Trends in Interdisciplinary Research

| Abstract | Digital health technologies are reshaping how communities access care, exchange health information, manage chronic conditions, respond to emergencies, and participate in decisions that influence their well-being. Telemedicine, mobile health applications, electronic health records, remote monitoring devices, health information exchange platforms, artificial intelligence, digital therapeutics, and online peer-support networks can extend health services beyond hospitals and clinics. Their value, however, depends not only on technical performance but also on whether they strengthen trust, equity, continuity of care, local participation, and the social conditions that enable people to live healthy lives. This review-based study examines emerging trends in digital health through an interdisciplinary framework that connects health informatics, public health, clinical care, behavioural science, sociology, ethics, law, design, and community development. It analyses the relationship between digital technologies and community well-being across access, self-management, prevention, mental health support, public health surveillance, health literacy, community resilience, and service coordination. Special attention is given to the uneven distribution of devices, connectivity, data literacy, language access, disability inclusion, gendered barriers, and confidence in digital systems. The analysis indicates that digital health technologies can improve community well-being when they are integrated with trusted local health workers, accessible service pathways, interoperable systems, meaningful consent, privacy safeguards, and inclusive design. Technology alone does not produce equitable health outcomes. Sustainable benefits require hybrid models of care, co-design with communities, transparent governance, independent evaluation, workforce capacity, and mechanisms to identify and correct exclusion. An interdisciplinary approach is therefore essential for moving digital health from isolated innovation toward accountable, people-centred, and community-responsive health systems. |
